Making bulk changes, where you need to replace one value with another, across your entire configuration - triggers, macros, guide articles, etc. - can be time consuming and error prone if done manually. Recently one of our customers faced this exact scenario, needing to replace a URL across dozens of configuration elements. Prior to using Salto, similar updates had been handled manually. Salto enabled them to do so with practically no manual work and with confidence that they can always revert the changes if something fails.

The challenge

  • Complex configuration with many instances of the URL to change
  • Consistency across environments - ensuring the change were reflected both in UAT and in production
  • Variations added complexity - URL discrepancies (such as HTTP vs. HTTPS) and the need to retain specific parameters added complexity to the project

The solution

Salto was able to provide the team with a structured and efficient way to handle the updates, addressing the challenge while ensuring accuracy and consistency:

Comprehensive search across the configuration

Salto's search functionality allowed the team to quickly identify all instance of the outdated URL across dozens of macros, triggers and Guide articles.

Bulk textual "find and replace"

Using Salto's editor, the team executed a bulk find-and-replace operation, accurately updating all instances of the outdated URLs. This also ensured that they could retain important parameters, eliminating risk of accidental deletions.

Test in UAT and automatically copy to production

Once the team was satisfied that the changes were correctly made in the UAT environment, they could simply deploy them to production without having to redo them manually.

With Salto the team was able to complete this bulk change faster, with greater confidence in accuracy and consistency of the changes. In fact, the team told us that what have taken them hours without Salto, ended up taking only 15 minutes. By using Salto’s web editor to edit their Zendesk instance, using a simple textual find and replace, they reduced the risks and complexity typically associated with bulk configuration updates.
